Yes they are getting closer to perfection and I agree with this that perfection would be where turning on the projector and displaying a black image wouldn't look any different than having the projector off (if the room had no other lighting). This is basically what on/off CR is meant to characterize. How close the projector gets to that for a given white level. ANSI CR is important too as it addresses reflections from bright parts of the image to dark parts, but true on/off CR helps give an idea of how close the absolute black would be to this ideal (and how close it will be when there is nothing very bright in the images).
Unfortunately the 75k:1 claim of the Epson is kind of exaggerated IMO (not something people will get in a correctly calibrated mode) and is aided by a dynamic iris, but the latest Epson is very good for on/off CR overall and it has been nice to see how far some of the LCDs have come in this area in the last few years.
